Fear stems from our unwillingness to experience a particular condition. It doesn’t matter what that condition is. If we are unwilling to experience it, we can be controlled. The condition could be anything: unemployment, divorce, solitude, poverty, confrontation, injury, illness, or death. All conditions have an opposing counterpart to which we are probably very attached: ie. employment, marriage, friendship, wealth, harmony, mobility, health, and life.
The stronger our attachment is to a particular condition, the more we fear to lose it, and the more unwilling we are to experience the opposite.
Attachment is the heart of all fear. The stronger the attachment, the greater the fear. Therefore, if we let go of our attachment to a favorable condition and become willing to experience the unfavorable condition, the fear disappears. When the fear disappears, the threat of the undesirable condition loses its power. If a boss threatens to fire an employee, the threat only works if the employee is unwilling to lose his job. If a parent threatens to take away television rights from the child, the threat only works if the child is unwilling to stop watching television.
